Abstract:  The reader is shown how to perform calculations for three problems. The first involves an order for Kefzol 1 g every 6 hours via an ambulatory infusion pump and shows how to figure the concentration of the drug in the cassette and the length of time that would elapse until the cassette emptied. The second involves an order for morphine sulfate 10 mg/mL and shows how to calculate the quantity of morphine that should be placed in the cassette to deliver the prescribed dose, the continuous infusion rate, the volume that would be delivered with each bolus dose, the maximum number of bolus doses that could be delivered each day and the length of time the cassette would last. The third involves an order for 500 mL of sodium chloride 0.9% to be administered over 8 hours. The reader is shown how to calculate the infusion rate to deliver this volume over the specified time and a new flow rate to deliver half of the solution in the specified amount of time.
