Abstract: There are numerous analytical methods that can be utilized in a compounding pharmacy for a quality-assurance program. Since the index of refraction of a liquid/solution is a physical constant, it can be used to assist in identification of a substance, establish its purity, and, in some instances, determine the concentration of an analyte in solution. This article serves as an introduction to refractive index and some applications of its use in a compounding program.
