Stability of Nebulizer Admixtures

Abstract:  There has been an increase in the compounding of admixed respiratory preparations for nebulization. These admixtures may improve patient convenience and compliance, but there are few data regarding the stability of these admixtures. In this study, four drugs from the four major respiratory therapeutic classes were evaluated. Each drug was formulated singularly and in a combination formulation. The physical and chemical stability of each formulation was evaluated under four storage conditions over the course of 8 weeks. The combination formulation was more stable than any of the individual formulations. The formulations stored under elevated temperatures were less stable than those stored at room temperature or in the refrigerator.
