Abstract:  The patient-care process in home infusion is like no other pharmacy practice setting and is demandingly different. It takes skills and mindsets that pharmacists were not taught in school. New patient needs or questions can occur at anytime, and you and your staff are not only dealing with medical professionals but with patients and caregivers who will have questions that must be answered on a timely basis. The infusion pharmacy staff must be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Needless to say, the most important facet of home-infusion service is ensuring safe and effective administration of the planned therapy. This is accomplished by having a standard patient-care process that addresses key aspects of care. This article walks the reader through the steps involved in the patient-care process. For the right clinician, the home-infusion environment can be very fulfilling.
