Abstract:  Sweetness is used to convert poor-tasting drugs into acceptable products to enhance compliance. This article covers the sweetening agents listed in the United States Pharmacopeia XXIII/National Formulary 18: acesulfame potassium; Aspartame NF; Dextrates NF; Dextrose USP; Fructose USP; Liquid Glucose NF; Glycerin USP; Maltitol Solution NF; Mannitol USP; Saccharin USP; saccharin calcium; Saccharin Sodium NF; sodium cyclamate; Sorbitol NF; stevia; Sucrose NF; Sugar, Compressible, NF; Sugar, Confectioner’s, NF; Syrup NF and Xylitol NF.Tables provide information regarding sweetening agents, their usual concentrations and solubilities.
