Abstract:  The reader is shown how to perform calculations for three problems. The first involves a formulation for a tetracaine/adrenaline/cocaine nasal solution and shows how to calculate the quantity of each ingredient needed to prepare the prescription, the quantity of each solution needed to prepare the prescription when using solutions of varying concentration and ways the presence of other ingredients in the solutions affect the tonicity of the final preparation. The second involves a formula for silver sulfadiazine 1% otic lotion for veterinary use and shows the reader how to calculate the quantity of lotion that will be made assuming that the 1% in the title of the formulation specifies percent weight in volume, and how to calculate the quantity of each ingredient that would be required. The third involves a formula for benzocaine otic solution and shows the reader how to calculate the quantity of benzocaine delivered in each dose.
