Abstract:  Dextrose injection is a sterile solution of hydrous dextrose in water for injection; it is used both as a vehicle (excipient) and as a source of calories (therapeutic agent). This brief discussion covers basic information about dextrose and dextrose injections. Compounding pharmacists should be aware of the two hydration states of dextrose and calculate accordingly, the low pH of its solutions and the potential stability and compatibility problems that might result when preparing admixtures.
