Abstract: The author, the executive vice president of the National Community Pharmacists Association, discusses the challenges faced by community pharmacy but suggests that community pharmacy can be more profitable than ever if it adapts to changes. Finding profitable services such as compounding and pharmacist-care niches will successfully carry independent pharmacy into the next century. The author discusses positive signs that the market is changing and the fact that community pharmacy is in a transition phase. He ends by leaving the reader with a couple of thoughts: don’t be afraid of the changes that are taking place and use them to your advantage. Don’t succumb to the prophets of doom and gloom, and don’t underestimate your political clout and the value your patients place on you.
