Abstract: The author, an attorney, provides an overview of the Controlled Substances Act and US Drug Enforcement Administration regulations regarding compounding and highlights recent issues regarding the use of controlled substances in formulations. She concludes that compounding pharmacists who compound controlled substances within the parameters for authorized compounding established by their state boards of pharmacy and US Food and Drug Administration guidelines should not have problems with their local Drug Enforcement Administration field office. However, if problems do arise, enforcement actions vary with each field office.
