Abstract: Dermatological prescriptions are frequently compounded. This article covers functions and characteristics of dermatologicals, considerations, types of compounded dermatological products, classification of ointment bases and preparation of dermatologicals. Tables provide information regarding ingredients used to enhance absorption of drugs and classification of topical vehicles based on their relationship to water.
