Abstract:  An excipient that can have a great influence on liquid, semisolid and solid dosage forms is the selected diluent. The author discusses the official excipients listed as capsule and tablet diluents: Calcium Carbonate USP; Calcium Phosphate, Dibasic, USP; Calcium Phosphate Dihydrate, Dibasic, USP; Calcium Phosphate, Tribasic, NF; Calcium Sulfate NF; Cellulose, Microcrystalline, NF; Cellulose, Powdered, NF; Dextrates NF, Dextrin NF, Dextrose Excipient NF; Fructose USP, Kaolin USP; Lactitol NF; Lactose Anhydrous NF; Lactose Monohydrate NF; Mannitol USP; Sorbitol NF; Starch NF; Starch, Pregelatinized, NF; Sucrose NF; Sugar, Compressible, NF ; and Sugar, Confectioner’s, NF. He also provides a table showing the physical properties of USP 24/19 capsule and tablet diluents.
