The pH Value of Urea Solutions in Purified Water

Abstract: The authors are responding to an article, “Physical Stability off Urea Topical Formulations,” by Loyd V. Allen, Jr., and Xiao-Hai Li, in the May-June 1997 issue of the International Journal of Pharmaceutical Compounding. They offer some experimental data concerning the pH value of urea solutions in purified water. In their comments, the authors indicate that they have found that the addition of small amounts of lactic or succinic acids to urea solutions at pH 3 to 5 can stabilize and retard the increase in the pH value of acidic urea solutions.
