Abstract:  This article highlights the most important principles and applications of current practices for sterilization and depyrogenation of materials, equipment and products that must be free from microbial and pyrogenic contamination. The author, affiliated with Lilly Research Laboratories, discusses the four basic methods for achieving sterilization: heat, gas, radiation and filtration. He also discusses emerging methods (ozone, gas plasma and white light).
