Abstract: The preparation of tablets is becoming routine, and the preparation of lozenges is now standard practice. These dosage forms usually incorporate a binder into their formulation. This article covers the following official binding agents: Acacia NF; Alginic Acid NF; Carboxymethylcellulose Sodium USP; Cellulose, Microcrystalline NF; Dextrin NF; Ethylcellulose NF; Gelatin NF; Glucose Liquid NF; Guar Gum NF; Hydroxypropylmethylcellulose USP; Methylcellulose USP; Polyethylene Oxide NF; Povidone USP; Starch, Pregelatinized NF; Syrup NF and Polyethylene Glycol NF. A table provides information regarding the physicochemical characteristics and packaging requirements of binding agents.
