Abstract:  The author, chair of the Sterile Compounding Committee of the United States Pharmacopeial Convention’s 2000-2005 Council of Experts, provides background information showing that, although compounding has been on the increase, especially in certain areas such as total parenteral nutrition, many pharmacy students are not receiving instruction in compounding. He continues to trace this paradox through the 1980s and 1990s, the decreasing academic emphasis on compounding juxtaposed with increasing interest and efforts to the contrary in the field. The author concludes that pharmacy education should introduce students to the main clinical purposes and basic skills of compounding.
