Abstract
Diabetes mellitus has a prevalence in dogs and cats of between 1:400 to 1:500. The author discusses feline diabetes, canine diabetes, clinical signs of disease, diagnosis, complications and treatment strategies. She concludes that pharmacists can play a valuable role in providing diabetic care and monitoring for both human and animal patients. By working with veterinarians, pharmacists can acquire the understanding that enables them to provide pharmacologic treatments for cats and dogs and to educate pet owners about the importance of diet, exercise and monitoring in the management of diabetes in animals.
