Abstract
The author discusses indications for use, therapeutic goals, energy requirements, protein requirements, carbohydrate requirements, lipid requirements and micronutrients. Tables provide indications for the use of total parenteral nutrition in veterinary patients, a sample illness energy requirement calculation for dogs and cats and recommended daily protein requirements for dogs and cats. The author concludes that total parenteral nutrition is a very important component of care for the malnourished and critically ill veterinary patient that cannot be adequately fed via the gastrointestinal tract. It should be viewed as an adjunct to and not a substitute for daily metabolic hydration.
