Quality in Pharmacy: The New Zealand Experience

Abstract: To assist pharmacies as they strive for quality, the Pharmaceutical Society of New Zealand initiated its Quality in Pharmacy program, which provides pharmacists with a consistent approach for monitoring the quality assurance of pharmacy operations. This discussion covers pharmacies in New Zealand, pharmacy quality audits, quality assurance in New Zealand pharmacies and effect of the Quality in Pharmacy program on New Zealand pharmacies. Tables provide a list of types of pharmaceutical reference resources required by New Zealand pharmacies, examples of compounding occurring in New Zealand pharmacies and a patient-counseling checklist. The author concludes that New Zealand is heading in the right direction regarding requirements for quality assurance in pharmacies and that the outcome will enable pharmacists to provide better service for customers.
