Abstract:  The author, president of the National Association for Ambulatory Care, begins by discussing the US healthcare system and some of the changes that have recently transformed it, especially the unbundling of services from hospitals to community-based ambulatory care service centers. He then goes on to describe the practice of ambulatory care medicine and examines the growth of this industry by looking at a definition of ambulatory care medicine, the common scope of services in an ambulatory care center, staffing, facility design and a definition of urgent care.
