Abstract:  This article provides a review of current literature on the replacement of bioidentical estradiol and estriol in women who exhibit symptoms of reduced levels of sex hormones as a result of natural or surgical menopause. It is intended as an update of an earlier review by Glasnapp that appeared in IJPC 2000;4:110-114. Main topics of discussion include vasomotor effects of reduced levels of sex hormones, osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, urogenital disorders and central nervous sysem disorders. The author concludes that administering estradiol and estriol produces great relief in women experiencing the vasomotor, osteoporotic, urogenital or central nervous system symptoms of menopause. Such therapy also confers cardioprotective effects.
