Abstract:  The risk of occupational exposure to chemicals used in the extemporaneous and batch compounding of human and veterinary preparations is significant. The author focuses on choosing the right device for the right job (laboratory fume hoods or source capture devices; clean benches; biological safety cabines, Class I, II and III), critical selection criteria (safety, venting, cost, size, operating standards, NSF 49), certification and treating the cause and not the symptom. A list of performance tests for biological safety cabinets and list of standards for fume hoods are also provided.

Related Keywords: Containment devices, for compounding
