Abstract: The author, the current executive vice president and chief executive officer of the National Community Pharmacists Association, discusses the increase in the number of independent pharmacies and a growing interest in pharmacy ownership. He reports that his organization has designated facilitating independent pharmacy ownership a top priority and that it will be looking for ways to help both first-time buyers and retiring pharmacists who wish to transfer ownership. He also discusses two objectives of the organization: to neutralize the negative effect of pharmacy benefit managers on independent pharmacies and to garner enactment of model pharmacy benefit manager regulation legislation. He ends by encouraging readers to get involved: plan ahead for retirement, invest in the education of young pharmacist entrepreneurs and make the transfer of independent pharmacies from one pharmacist to another as painless and financially beneficial as possible for all parties.
