Abstract
The authors describe their method of compounding a slowly dissolving pilocarpine lozenge to be used to treat xerostomia. They began by formulating a series of lozenges, initially without drug, to determine consistency and pursued the problem of molding each individual lozenge. They used a formula for glycerinated gelatin suppositories as a starting point. They provide a table of trial formulas of placebo lozenges, to which active drug , if it is water soluble, could be easily dissolved in the aqueous phase when the mix is relatively cool (or stirred in, producing a slurry, just before congealing).
