Abstract:  Many pharmacists and pharmacy students struggle with the process of calculating the amount of sodium chloride necessary to produce an isotonic solution. This article explains a process whereby an isotonic solution may be calculated simply and accurately. The answer may be expressed as a percentage, which is often convenient for compounding pharmacists who prepare different volumes of the same compound. There are five steps to Glasnapp’s Rule. The author takes the reader through each of these steps and leads him/her through calculations in three example problems.
