Abstract: The reader is shown how to perform calculations for two problems. The first concerns a formula for benzocaine ointment to be used to treat “dry socket.” The reader is shown how to calculate the percent strength and the ratio strength of benzocaine in the formula, the quantity of each ingredient that would be needed to prepare 1 lb of this ointment, the quantity of clove oil that would be needed for 1 lb of ointment and the quantity of water that would be contained in the 1-lb batch of ointment. The second involves a formula for benzocaine troches. The reader is shown how to calculate the quantity of benzocaine contained in each troche, the quantity of water that needs to be added to prepare 12 troches and the quantity of aspartame that will be needed to prepare 12 troches.
