Abstract
Tea tree oil has been used for hundreds of years as an antiseptic by Australians. During World War II, it was used as a cutting oil in machine oil because it prevented infection in cuts caused by metal filings during metal tooling work. It is now used in antiseptic creams, acne gels, deodorants, toothpastes, mouthwashes and antifungal preparations, shampoos and vaginal preparations. In this article, the author discusses its composition and uses. Tea tree oil shows great promise in wound healing. Its activity against Staphylococcus aureus has been demonstrated by its long-term use as an antiseptic. Its use in compounding may expand because of its demonstrated antiseptic effects.
