Abstract:  This article features the design process involved in setting up a compounding laboratory in a pharmacy, covering such topics as using design to make compounding activities visible, figuring out how much space will be necessary for one’s volume of business, working with designers vs. doing it oneself, solving cabinetry issues, dealing with cleanrooms, cultivating customer awareness and figuring out whether it is worth the effort. Comments by compounding pharmacists who have been through this process are included, along with comments by pharmacy design specialists, a representative of the National Association of Pharmacy Boards and a representative of a company that supplies modular cleanrooms.
