Abstract:  When formulating ophthalmic preparations, what is appropriate for one formulation may not work for another; each drug must be considered based on its properties, compatibility and stability with various excipients. This article covers preparation methods and techniques (solutions, suspensions and ointments), physicochemical considerations (clarity, tonicity, pH and buffering, sterility, preservation, viscosity enhancers, packaging and other considerations), compatibility issues, quality control, storage and labeling, stability and sample vehicles. A table provides information regarding viscosity-increasing agents for ophthalmic preparations.
