Abstract:  The reader is shown how to perform calculations for three problems. The first concerns a formulation for an isotonic solution for ophthalmic use and shows how to calculate the quantity of glycerin, cromolyn sodium and a 1:750 solution of benzalkonium chloride to be used to fill this prescription. The second involves a dropper that delivers a specified dose per drop into the eye. The reader is shown how to calculate the quantity of cromolyn sodium the patient is receiving per dose and the quantity of drug being retained in the eye. The third involves a new drug with a specified sodium chloride equivalent and shows how to calculate the maximum concentration of drug that can be in an aqueous solution and still remain isotonic.
