Abstract

Edetic acid and its salts are widely used as a chelating agent in therapy and as preservative adjuncts in pharmaceutical formulations. This article discussed uses of edetic acid and its salts, incompatibilities, edetic acid, sodium edetate, disodium edetate, trisodium edetate and edetate calcium disodium. The edetates are a unique class of compounds that are widely used in products consumed every day. Properly used, they are advantageous; however, improperly used, they are quite dangerous. Many people appear to be unaware of their existence.
