Abstract: Drug shortages due to manufacturer backorders and discontinuations are a concern and frustration for pharmacists, physicians, and patients. Keeping up-to-date on the latest shortages, utilizing good key references, and using compounding as an alternative source for the drugs can keep the patients on their current therapy that is optimum for them. This article discusses some of the factors that influence drug supplies, provides some of the resources to find information on backordered or discontinued drugs, and provides some formulations as alternatives to backordered or discontinued medications.
