Abstract:  The authors, two attorneys and one physician with the United States Pharmacopeial Convention, Inc., discuss standards in terms of those applied to both manufactured and compounded drugs, those applied to compounded drugs and recipes for compounded products. They conclude that compounded preparations are a useful therapeutic element and that together federal and state officials, the United States Pharmacopeial Convention, Inc., practitioners, consumers and others can create an environment to allow patients to receive well-compounded preparations that contribute to their health and well-being.
