Abstract: The authors, with Purdue University School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, describe what their institution offers pharmacy students to provide basic knowledge of compounding. This includes a series of lectures and laboratories during the first 2 years and an elective advanced compounding class. The class, a pilot project, is being kept to 12 to 14 students. Additional instruction will still be necessary for students to acquire all the skills required for contemporary compounding. The class is scheduled as a one-credit elective and will meet for 150 minutes a week for 8 weeks. The authors provide the course schedule/syllabus with topics to be discussed, the basis for evaluating grades, a list of materials in the student supply kit and a list of laboratory materials. Results of the pilot class will be used to improve the course and to determine whether there are sufficient interest and resources for additional compounding electives.
