Abstract: In this interview, a compounding pharmacist who specializes in pain management discusses his innovative approach to dispensing compounded and commercially available narcotics. The program he has designed virtually eliminates drug diversion. Patients never touch a written prescription, medications are delivered and signed for by the intended patient, and physicians receive written reports of their patients’ drug use. The system has been so successful that the percentage of his business represented by pain management has grown from 1% to more than 30% in the last 3 years. Patients receive ample counseling, and staff meet periodically with representatives of the US Drug Enforcement Administration, who review and approve his dispensing practices. The interviewee outlines the principles on which he established this system.
