Abstract:  In this minireview, the extent of the problem of feline pain, indications of pain in cats and drugs used to alleviate acute and chronic pain in cats are discussed. Tables provide a listing of common behaviors thought to be associated with pain in cats and analgesics for acute and chronic pain. The author concludes that providing feline analgesia is an exciting and challenging specialty and that very few drugs provide long-term analgesia for cats. Because cats are often not eager to take oral medications, the compounding pharmacist plays an important role in providing palatable, effective formulations of drugs that can be accurately administered to relieve pain with minimal toxicity.
