Abstract:  This discussion of dry skin covers background information, contributing factors, composition of dry-skin preparations, silicones and dosage forms used for treatment. Tables list ingredients that can be used in dry-skin preparations and tips for patients. The following sample formulas are provided: Emollient-type formulas: oleaginous and absorption (Wool Alcohols Ointment, Water-Absorbing Ointment and Natural Emollient Oil), emulsion-type formulas (Emulsion Base), preparations that can serve as a basis for emollient creams (Premixed Oil Phase for Preparing Oil-in-Water Emulsions, and Oil-in-Water Emulsion), lotions (Lotion with Cyclomethicone), Lip-Balm Sticks (Water-Repelling Lip-Balm Stick, and Lip-balm Stick) and lip ointments(Water-Repelling Lip Ointment, and Lip Ointment). In summary, using these formulas the compounding pharmacist can individualize effective formulations by easily making changes, adding additional ingredients, incorporating perfumes, etc.
