Abstract:  Powders are intimate mixtures of dry, finely divided drugs and excipients intended for internal or external use and convenient for administering to pediatric or geriatric patients. The author discusses properties of powders, methods and techniques for the preparation of powders, physicochemical uniqueness of compounding ingredients (eutectics, hygroscopic and deliquescent powders, efflorescent powders, explosive mixtures), incorporation of liquids, specific quality control (bulk powders and divided powders), storage and labeling, stability and counseling patients. Two examples of powder formulations are provided: Electrolyte and Rehydration Powder for Solution, and Menthol Dusting Powder.
