Abstract

The antidepressant effects of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors are currently attributed to responses exhibited after periods of prolonged administration. Postulations have been formed accrediting the successful treatment of anxiety-related disorders with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors to a similar mechanism of action as displayed in the treatment of depression. One of the drugs in this class is sertraline. This article provides a case report of a pediatric patient diagnosed with an anxiety disorder who was treated with transdermal sertraline. The compounding of dosage forms tailored to meet patient-specific needs may be an integral part in the successful delivery of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor therapy.
