Abstract: Calibration involves a comparison of measurements; one of known magnitude of correctness that is compared to another measurement made in as similar a way as possible with a second device. The device with the known or assigned correctness is called the standard. The second device is the test instrument or any of several other names for the device being calibrated. Some of the topics that are briefly discussed in this article are: the definition of calibration, the history of calibration, the basic calibration process, calibration process success factors, how to improve the quality of calibrations, instrument calibrations, the types of measurement error, etc.
