Abstract: This article covers the applications of specific gravity in a quality-control program in compounding pharmacies. Main points of the discussion include quality-control applications of specific gravity, theory and background (temperature effects, pressure effects and calibration and use of instruments) and instruments (pycnometer, hydrometer and Westphal balance). Two sample problems with answers are included, along with a figure showing the standard curve of specific gravities of sucrose in water.
