Abstract:  Complementary medicines, vitamins and herbal remedies may be useful in the control of blood glucose and diabetes-related complications when applied as part of a therapeutic “wellness” plan for persons with diabetes. Metabolic control of blood sugars and prevention of diabetes complications are the key concerns that must be addressed in the wellness plan of a person with diabetes. The use of complementary medicines must be considered within the context of an individualized assessment of risk versus benefit. Many nutrients and natural products have been identified as having potential beneficial effects on blood-sugar control, treatment and prevention of complications. The author discusses magnesium, vitamin B6, quercetin, potassium, vitamin E and other antioxidants and zinc and goes on to discuss the effect of diet and exercise as complementary medicine and a wellness approach to diabetes care.
