Abstract:  A number of factors are involved in the selection of a preservative for ophthalmics. This discussion covers physicochemical characteristics, uniqueness and incompatibilities of common preservatives (benzalkonium chloride, benzethonium chloride, chlorobutanol, the parabens, mercurial compounds and testing of preservative effectiveness. A table provides information regarding common preservatives used in ophthalmic, otic and nasal products. A sidebar provides a primer on sterilization and sterility testing.
