Abstract

A significant percentage of the practice of NuCara Pharmacy in Waterloo, IA, involves veterinary compounding; and one oft he pharmacy’s most popular veterinary compounds is a diethylstilbestrol capsule used for estrogen-responsive incontinence in spayed female dogs. In the past, the pharmacy used vegetable oil as a component in the formulation of these capsules, with no problems. However, last April personnel began noticing leakage problems with some oil-filled capsules. To overcome this problem, an innovative technique was developed by Anthony H. Lake, MT (ASCP), chemist in the compounding laboratory. The technique is described here.
