Abstract

In this article, the relationship of biotechnology to extemporaneous pharmaceutical compounding is examined. Main topics of discussion include definitions and types of biotechnological preparations, applications for biotechnology, routes of delivery of biotechnologic products, composition and preparation of biotechnologic products, special considerations, protecting biologic activity, physicochemical considerations, example problems, quality control, packaging and patient counseling. A table provides a list of stabilizers and information about their class and action.
