Abstract:  Radiolabeled blood cells hold an important position in the field of diagnostic imaging. Current technology is primarily focused on radiolabeling with technetium-99m or indium-111. The author discusses technetium-99m-labeled red blood cells, current technetium-99m-red-blood-cell labeling methods (in vivo, in vitro and modified in vivo methods), radiolabeled leukocytes (white blood cells), current white-blood-cell radiolabeling techniques, technetium 99-m-labeled white blood cells and indium-lll-labeled white blood cells. In vivo radiolabeling procedures offer greater safety for the patient and the nuclear pharmacist; however, in vitro procedures completed under sterile conditions can improve the performance of the radiolabeled cells after reinjection.
