Abstract

The reader is taken through the calculations necessary to solve two problems. The first involves a hospitalized patient who needs intravenous magnesium and shows the reader how to figure the quantity of magnesium chloride hexahydrate solution needed to supply a specific dose, the osmolarity of the solution if the dose is diluted to a certain strength, the infusion rate in drops per minute when administered over 4 hours using an administration set with a drop factor of 20 drops/mL and the quantity of Mag-Ox tablets the patient will need to receive orally each day after he/she leaves the hospital. The second problem provides information from the United States Pharmacopeia about the dissolution test for buspirone hydrochloride tablets and shows how to calculate the limits for buspirone hydrochloride 15-mg tablets.
