Abstract

The author provides problems involving two different formulations: one using fentanyl in Pluronic lecithin organogel and one using morphine sulfate and clonidine hydrochloride for epidural injection. In the first formulation, information is provided showing the reader how to calculate ratio strength of fentanyl in the gel, number of milliliters of the gel needed to prepare a 10-day supply for the patient, the minimum weighable amount for a balance with an accuracy of +/- 5%, the smallest amount of gel that can be made using the balance without performing an aliquot calculation, the amount of time the drug will last using 150 micrograms every 4 hours and the amount of each ingredient needed to prepare 26 mL of gel. For the second formulation, problems involve figuring how many milligrams each of morphine sulfate and clonidine hydrochloride would be contained in a 5-mL injection of the solution, how many milliliters of these injections would be needed to prepare 250 mL of the epidural solution and the percent strength of sodium chloride in the epidural solution.
