Abstract

As practiced in the mid-19th century, pharmacy required a great deal of manual manipulation. Grinding, comminuting, percolating, and macerating were just some of the many manual processes practiced in the shop and laboratory. Digital dexterity with string was an important skill. In the days before screw tops, the pharmacist needed to secure lids and other items to protect the integrity of his products. Pharmacy knots were only one of the many arts of the mid-19th century pharmacist.
