Abstract:  The curriculum of the University of Connecticut School of Pharmacy continues to evolve just as the practice of pharmacy evolves. This is especially true in the practice of compounding, which has re-emerged as a respected art and science. The practice of compounding focuses on pharmaceutical elegance but also requires pharmacists to use their professional judgment based on limited data to assess the stability and efficacy of a compound before dispensing the preparation. The University’s basic curriculum facilitates learning proper techniques and formulations, and the Advanced Compounding elective challenges students to master the evaluation of literature in the area of compounded preparations. While encouraging students to learn from mistakes, this elective allows students to gain confidence with techniques and available resources, empowering them to think creatively and improve patient care as they become active compounding pharmacists.
