Abstract: Many pharmaceutical preparations require the adjustment of viscosity to produce the desired characteristics that can make them useful and acceptable to patients. In this article, the author discusses United States Pharmacopeia XXIV/National Formulary 19 stiffening agents: Hydrogenated Castor Oil NF, Cetostearyl Alcohol NF, Cetyl Alcohol NF, Cetyl Esters Wax NF, Paraffin NF, Synthetic Paraffin NF, Stearyl Alcohol NF, Emulsifying Wax NF, White Wax NF and Yellow Wax NF.
